“Photography is not a legitimate career path.”
This is what I tried to convince my mom of when she suggested I take a photography course in high school. I’ve been eating those words ever since. I had no idea in that moment how powerful this medium could be. Since starting my career in 2011 it’s plucked me out of Colorado and dragged me around the world teaching me more than I thought possible - forever humbling me and my high school wisdom. After having my eyes opened for several years in the New York City photography scene, I bopped around a bit until at last finding myself in Germany (of all places). Definitely didn’t see that one coming. What started off as a joke to learn the German language turned into a new zeal for life and a desire to know and understand people on a deeper level. In this regard, learning the German language has been the easy part. People are only slightly more complex...
Fun fact: Mein Lieblingswort auf deutsch ist Eierschalensollbruchstellenverursacher.
Artist statement:
An image is only mine when I click the shutter. After that, it’s up to the viewer’s interpretation.
I can’t remember where I heard this quote, but it’s something I’ve always carried with me. Everyone is different. Obviously. We have all grown up in different circumstances and environments. Those experiences shape the scope in which we view the world. And for that reason all imagery is uniquely understood by the viewer. It’s all relative. But the thing about art is that it’s not necessarily meant to make you understand. The hope is that it makes you feel. Your feelings are unique to you, but some are universal. Those tend to be the ones that connect us to each other.
The hope with my imagery is to transport an atmosphere that connects you to a time, place, and feeling - whether it exists in this reality or somewhere else within you.
